Why Scotland needs a Wellbeing Economy
Our economy is not fixed. It is the product of the choices, rules and institutions we create. It has been designed – so it can be redesigned to better serve people, communities and the natural world.
Across Scotland, people face interconnected challenges, from poverty, inequality and economic insecurity to environmental breakdown and declining trust in institutions. These issues are often treated separately, but they are all shaped by the same underlying economic system.
A Wellbeing Economy starts with a simple question: what should our economy deliver?
We believe success should be judged not simply by how much the economy grows, but by whether people have enough to live with dignity, communities are thriving, nature is protected and everyone has a meaningful say in the decisions that affect their lives.
Across Scotland, communities, civil society organisations, businesses and policymakers are already developing new ideas, challenging established ways of thinking and demonstrating what a Wellbeing Economy can look like in practice.
A Wellbeing Economy is both possible and practical. Achieving it requires us to change policy, change the stories we tell about our economy and build a stronger movement for change.
Our strategy sets out how WEAll Scotland will contribute to making that happen over the next three years.
Our role
WEAll Scotland is Scotland’s network of organisations and individuals committed to redesigning our economy.
We connect people, organisations and ideas, helping to build the shared understanding, relationships and momentum needed to drive long-term economic transformation.
As part of the global Wellbeing Economy Alliance, we connect Scotland to an international network of country hubs, members and experts – bringing learning from around the world into Scotland and sharing Scotland’s leadership internationally.

Mobilise the Movement
Connect and strengthen the people and organisations across Scotland working to transform our economy.
We will deepen relationships across our network, support leadership, encourage collaboration and help turn shared ambition into collective action.
Change the Narrative
Make the Wellbeing Economy easier to understand – what it is, why Scotland needs one and what it can mean in practice for people’s lives.
We will connect economic issues to people’s everyday experiences and help more people communicate positive, hopeful and evidence-based stories about the economy.
Amplify and Advocate
Build support for Wellbeing Economy approaches among decision-makers and help turn ideas into meaningful policy and practice.
We will bring together evidence, lived experience and practical examples to help Wellbeing Economy ideas shape Scotland’s political and economic debate.
Changing the rules of the economy to deliver good lives for all within planetary boundaries
Our vision hasn’t changed: we’re committed to changing the rules of the economy to deliver good lives for all within planetary boundaries. Over the next three years, we’re more focused than ever on supporting and mobilising the movement needed to make that happen.
Our Strategy 2026–29 sets out the role WEAll Scotland will play – and how we’ll work with our members and partners to create lasting change.
